HOLIDAYS IN THE GEOGRAPHIC CENTRE OF SOUTH TYROL
Reinswald
Reinswald, without doubt the sunniest mountain village in the Sarntal, is situated on the eastern slope of the Durnholz Valley at 1,492 metres. The neighbourhood of Reinswald, whose name is derived from the German Reginharteswald = Reinhartswald = Reinswald, was first mentioned in the records in 1177. Since 1976 Reinswald has been the ski resort in the Sarntal holiday region. The village and its environs have 542 inhabitants.
It was only as recently as 1970 that it finally proven that long before the birth of Christ there must have been a lively settlement in the area of Reinswald. It was in this very year that the first prehistoric smelting place in South Tyrol from the Bronze Age was discovered. In the Middle Ages silver was mined above Reinswald in the area below the Toter Rücken and close to the Schwarzsee lakes. Mineshafts bear witness even today to this time. Above Reinswald in the area of the Sunnolm are the legend-shrouded Urle-Lockn, the geographic centre of South Tyrol. Today Reinswald is a modern, inviting family skiing resort with wide, sunny pistes (22 km). A 4.5 km-long toboggan run and a snow park provide all kinds of winter fun. In winter the huts on the pistes and in summer those along the Urlesteig are a great place to rest and treat yourself to a bite to eat.
